For the past 24 hours, opposition MPs in the House of Commons have staged a series of consecutive confidence votes to pressure the Liberal government to let the former attorney general and justice minister answer more questions before a committee of MPs - but according to a former law clerk of the House, that pressure tactic was unnecessary.
